Título: The English thread
Publicado por: Divarascka en 17 de Noviembre de 2010, 01:13
Since there is already a German thread, I assumed that it would be a sensible idea to also create an English thread, especially since it is a more common language than German.

Any queries you have you can post here, and the rest of the community can help you out, plus you can also use to chat and so on and so forth.

WAT?

Anyway, "I used to write" has a different meaning from "I am used to writing". The first one is used for past habits and the second is for thing you ordinarily do, current habits.

nvm = nevermind
omw = on my way
wtf/lol/rofl - estas las conoce todo dios xD
wb = welcome back
gtfo = get the fuck out (muy conocida también)
idd = indeed
ty --> yw = thank you --> your wellcome
afk = away from keyboard
asap = as soon as possible
atm = at the moment
pov = point of view
bbl = be back later
btw = by the way
cu/cya = despedirse (see you)
imo/imho = in my (honest/humble) opinion
gr8 = great
w/o - w/e = without - whatever
u2 = you too
np = no problem
idk = I don´t know

WHAAAAAT.

"I use to write" is incorrect. The correct expression would be "I usually write". "I'm used to writing" is also right, being the spanish equivalent something like "me he acostumbrado a escribir" or "estoy acostumbrado a escribir", and not "suelo escribir".

-She isn't a friend of mine, she was in my class.This sentence is fine, the use of a contraction is in no way prohibited or changes the meaning of the sentence. Even in written text contractions are used.

-So you can wait seated. This sentence is also fine. I translates as : Puedes esperar sentado. You'd better take a seat and enjoy your wait. This tranlates as: Mejor sientate y disfruta tu espera. Whilst (or while, for some of you, both words have exactly the same meaning, whilst being older and more literary) both sentences are correct, I don't think that mine necessarily needed correcting.

-I assume people are fine having their mistakes pointed out. Anyway, if you are not ok with that, let us know. I assume that you changed this part in order to make it easier to understand, right?

English is not a language on its own, its a creole. A totum revolutum, not worthy of consideration in arts and literacy. Its importance is caused from political events rather than cultural ones.

And, just as an addendum, i felt this thread pointless since the begining, that's why i put all this out.

ElBrujo, the english monarchy is of French origin. The French was the official language of the country since the Xth century to the XVIIth, after the Revolution. Enough evidence?

That's what I understand by "thinking in the language". My thoughts (like Gilles said) are in English while I build the sentences.

Edit:
If you have a different idea of it (and please, let's not start another discussion about concepts and that stuff :lol: ) then it's ok. My point is that it's not difficult for me to "think" in English while I speak or write it.

I did History GCSE. I studied WWII, the Cold War, the Vietnam war, something else that I can't recall right now, and the Bliztkrieg for a piece of coursework.

I did not study British history, because I WASN'T in England during my primary school years. I also do not know Spanish history, yet I can also speak Spanish, and technically am (or have the right to be) Spanish, and I don't know very much about German history, yet I AM and have always been, German.

For your information, since you haven't figured it out, I finished the ESO (Educación Secundaria Obligatoria) and England, and did there Bachillerato. I did not do History A-lavels.

I don't like you anymore
you used to watch me shave
now all you do is stare at the floor
ohh, Dear penis
I dont like you anymore

It used to be you and me
a papertowel and a dirty magazine
that's all we needed to be getting by
now it seems things have changed
and I think that you're the one to blame
dear penis
I don't like you anymore

[...]

It's not mine, its Rodney Carrington's, and it doesnt match my situation... but still involves a realationship btween a man and his penis. :)

Stewart fucking rules.

He and Colbert should run for the US presidency. Did you see the rally they made to restore sanity and/or fear? It was kinda similar to what Psyro is trying to do, but with thousands of people, rock stars and such. A centrist, peaceful and reasonable approach to politics just when the Tea Party was gaining more and more power.

Fucking a.

It was not me, but a little girl with an outrageous accent called ---, who was happy and wrongly believing that she will find the water of the eternal youth. Fortunately, as she grew and her innocence was lost by pedobear by her own silly thoughts - though she had always blamed on a purely and chaste boy -, she finally came to know that she will not ever become a little young girl, and will remain old and wrinkled like the witch - others prefered to refer her as a goose - she is instead.

Anyway, I brought this thread back because it has an educational purpose helping us to improve our english by practicing a little every day and also learning from others. Oh, and it could be useful as an international platform for foreigners and could help them to integrate. Yes, this isn't very realistic but that was the first excuse I came up with.

Nope, it should be "a strong" ale.

I've never known the differences between ale, lager, stout and all that stuff. I just drink beer, bro.

I agree on the Belgian beer part. There's this bar near Sagrada Familia, they have a good selection of imported beers and the Belgian ones are by far the best.

I know that. In fact, sometimes a word that begins with a vowel goes just with an a, like a University or a European. I was only hesitating if it was because of the next word or because the noun.

In Madrid we have a Belgic bar. I have never been there. :(

That's because these are not vowels but diphtongs, which kind of work like consonants.

Actually they aren't diphtongs, my bad :vergu: The first character would be /j/, which sounds like a vowel but is actually a consonant.

I failed Phonetics so feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken :lol:

Last week I spent a few days in Gran Canaria. One day we found a pub with an impressive selection of imported beers (about 100, or something like that, which is pretty amazing for Gran Canaria). They had Duvel and Rochefort 10 *.* and also they gave me a free sample bottle of Viva!, a self-made beer produced by a local microbrewery that was slightly better than spanish industrial trademarks (or even worse, canarian industrial trademarks xD)

Pingu, in Madrid, near Bilbao, we have a pub and an international beer store. Thanks to that small store I could finally taste american beers (like flying dog, although it was a little bit stronger than I would have liked :lol: )

Hoegaarden Forbidden Fruit, Charles Quint, Delirium Tremens? These are great too.

Has anyone tried Samichlaus? They have it in the S. Familia bar I mentioned, and it's supposed to be hardcore shit (14% alcohol). But I'm not so sure about getting it because I once tasted a 12% beer and it was fucking gross, didn't even taste like beer.

It's really difficult to find in Madrid, but you shouldn't have any problem in Barna. It's a low-alcohol beer (around 2% or so), but very, very tasty. If you want to drink beer without getting drunk and avoiding those 0,0% shits, it's a really nice choice.

No, seriously, I think that the actual problem with the British people is that their beers are awful (same level as loads of the Spanish ones) and therefore when they drink beer they get drunk so easy. Same thing with Japanese and their sake. It's not that strong, but they take a shot and they're drunk enough to nose-bleed. :lol:

I think that comes from the latin verb "capio". Is the same root for the italian verb "capire" (capisci?) and some spanish words (capturar, for example).

I didn't notice the existance of this thread. I don't understand why the people here write in a defensive way, with small phrases, without working their hearts out to practice. (Work the heart out to + infinitive = Poner toda la carne en el asador en ...)

By the way, beware of the use of a gerund after the "will", because it's not allowed:

If you want to build a future form, then the correct way to do it is "will + infinitive". For example:

Citar
I will download it...

You can use the gerund as a noun, being object of the verb, but then you need a main verb for the action. In this case, the verb that will fit better, is "start":
Citar
I will start downloading it...

I must thank Start Trek The Original Series for teaching me english during my childhood.

This started as a forochat thread in Offtopic, I guess it will just remain that way. Personally I don't come here to practice my English because I already do that in other websites and at university, and anyway I don't really feel the need to practice, I think- and I don't mean to sound arrogant- I'm already good enough at it.

This is the present progressive (continuous) form. It's present, you're downloading it at this moment.

To add the inmediate future form to the present continuous you need to add the "action", for example "I'm going to download it". You're not downloading it at this moment, but you will download it in a near future.

I'm sorry, I didn't notice that this was "forochat".... I thought that it was to practice the written language. Sorry again.

The present continuous is used to talk about future arrangements wich have already been made. Example: Sue and Alan are getting married on June 21st
You can say that download something it's not exactly an arrangement, but the present continuous it's a correct form to express future in some situations.

Take a look to my previous post, and to your post. I talk about the difference of using the present progressive with an action verb and without an action verb, and you present me your example with an "action", as I told before.

You will notice the difference between these two phrases:
- "I'm fucking you in the butt": I started to fuck your anus a moment ago, i'm actually fucking your anus, and I will be fucking your anus in the future until I cum. This is present continuous, is actually happening and it will be happening during a little time until a near future.
- "I'm going to fuck you in the butt": I'm not fucking your anus. But prepare, it will be right now. This is the future form, with the action.

To add the immediate future form to the present continuous you need to add the "action"

Or just the when. That is, it is possible to say "I'm fucking you in the anus tomorrow". Not normal (maybe even a little "slangy"), but used, specially in nowadays speech, and that would not mean "I have already started , but I will continue tomorrow", but "Tomorrow, at some point of the day, I will be doing it, definitely". The thing is that, as Vande posted, it has to be kind of arranged. And it is definitely much more part of American dialect than British one.

(It is a) Good thing they don't have a regulating linguistic academy as Spanish does, and instead they work on corpora in order to analyze English as a whole, so it evolves unrestricted. :gñe:

Immediate, immigrant, immerse, immature, etc. The prefix is correct, but it undergoes a process of assimilation, thus the same morpheme ends up being represented by a different morph (allomorphy: different realizations of the same morpheme).

What do you think about the syntax of the next sentence?

"This could explain why the reader –who in this case it is me myself, even though I am no native –could find his text slightly difficult to read"

I am unsure of whether it sounds too strange or not, taking into account that it is for an academic review.
Título: Re:The English thread
Publicado por: Mr Winters en 24 de Febrero de 2014, 21:36
"who in this case it is me myself"

This sounds weird. At the very least I'd get rid of the pronoun "it", it's redundant.

I'd say something like "This could explain why the reader –that is/that is to say, myself..." and maybe drop the "myself" and go third person ("the author of this essay" and shit like that), since formal writing is not supposed to be in first person.

But maybe it doesn't have to be super formal like that so dunno.

"This could explain why the reader –who in this case it is me myself, even though I am no native –could find his text slightly difficult to read"

Unless it is extremely important who the reader is, I'd get rid of the explanatory note:

"This could explain why one could find his text slightly difficult to read".

The "could" already provides enough room for the statement to be understood as a possibility, not as a certainty. Also, the repetition of "could" may be bypassed by using "might" (although I would go further and not write it), thus:

"This (might) explain(s) why one could find his text slightly difficult to read" .

Also, I assume that your intention is to clarify that the text is not really elaborated but that it has some insights or stuff like that. If that is not your idea, I'd do either:

"This explains why one could find the text slightly difficult" (you're assuming thus that "one" is not obviously the author).

or:

"This explains why one could find the/its reading slightly difficult" (hence clarifying that one is the reader).

If you really want to get rid of everything vaguely superfluous:

"This (could/might) explain(s) why its/the reading might/could be slightly difficult".

If you want to use another verb that already has the idea of not being fully bulletproof, I'd use "This makes clearer why..."

It is important to get to the point ASAP. Journals (and committees, for what is worth) are pretty straight-forward on not letting any extra-wording into their pages.

Hope I've been helpful!  ^^:

1- Given the fact that the previous literary approaches are based in a common myth that this thesis rejects in its foundation, that objectivization of the studies comes from letting time pass between the opus and the criticism, its debunking requires a critical approach that either merges in a dialectical way different literary and philosophical criticisms or creates a new one, always from an interdisciplinar perspective. This does not interfere with traditional criticism inasmuch as it fulfills a different role, in fact working concurrently with it in the understanding of Literature. Thus, by reducing the concept of analysis to its primeval form, where there is only a need of student subject and studied object, a parallel branch to literary criticism grows, where spatiology plays the main role.
2- Cultural construction analysis in the shape of sociology and psychology conjoined, opposed to traditional literary criticism, includes among its theories enough background to support the previous postulation. Thus, in order to provide the necessary theoretical background to defend the philosophical frame within which this thesis appears, Contemporary cultural production must be at the core of it, as well as an interdisciplinar understanding of cultural thinking.
